Catalina Island Museum’s Mail Carrier History Virtual Event

The Catalina Island Museum continues to bring virtual programming and events for people to enjoy art, culture, and history safely in the comfort of their own home.
The museum will be hosting "You've Got Mail: Catalina Island's Mail Carrier History" highlighting a rare letter in the museum's permanent collection from 1826 on Saturday, January 23, at 11 a.m. via Zoom.
Written on the island and mailed to Ipswich, Massachusetts, the virtual event will share the history of the first known letter carried from the West Coast to the East Coast via Cape Horn and explore how it relates to the United States and Mexican history and a brief background about the use of carrier pigeons on the island. A special guest will share information about training pigeons and the Post Mistress of Avalon's Post Office will share how even today the island is unique in the way its mail delivery is handled.
The event will be hosted through Zoom and is open to all. Tickets are available to members for $5 and non-members for $10. catalinamuseum.org/calendar
