Food that Stands Out

08.04.14

By Kelley Moody

Anyone who is vegetarian or vegan understands the struggle that may ensue when looking for quality food when eating out. That’s where Laguna Beach’s favorite healthy shack comes in to play. The Stand specializes in options that are meant to leave you feeling full, clean and refreshed. Whether you’re craving something sweet or in need of some nourishment, The Stand has all the best options in an optimum location.

It doesn’t get much better than interesting flavors, funky location and healthy options to make my day. My first visit to The Stand was on a day outing with some friends to visit our favorite artistic and beachy spots. I have never encountered a menu that literally made my jaw drop, but not necessarily because of the delicious, green options. Rather, the vibrantly colored menu is intricately painted along the front of the establishment and was both legible, eye catching and creative, a true piece of art. One of the main tables at the front of the little outdoor restaurant is built around a beautiful shady tree, creating its own little habitat for its hungry customers.

The staff is incredibly social and engaged in each person who approaches their window, offering plenty of suggestions and striking up unique conversation with individuals both young and old. Their charming interactions were probably really what sold me on the place, having watched them take turns in a serious debate with children on the size of their unsweetened, all natural frozen fruit soft serve or ask an older man about his musical interests.

The food certainly sealed the deal. I, myself, had a short period of vegetarianism years back and have always been a fan of any eatery that can make a truly enjoyable animal product free dish. Not to mention, most if not all of the food caters to the needs of those who may have allergies to gluten or lactose. Naturally, I went for an avocado sandwich filled with sprouts, veggies and a salsa that left me feeling more than satisfied. My best tip is to grab a number of napkins prior to your meal. They were definitely necessary within just the first few bites. I also encourage investigating the dessert options.

The pastries are light on the calories, and the desirable, all natural “ice cream” is actually just a variety of blended fruit made at just the right consistency. The shakes, also made from fresh fruit and nut based milks, are also favored by many customers.

The Stand has definitely been added to my list of best stops when I make the trip to Laguna. Though small, the food is mighty and pleasant company is a guarantee.

Open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
