Summer Opera Camp

07.31.19

LA Opera invites you to experience the culmination of Summer Opera Camp where students will perform Then I Stood Up: A Civil Rights Cycle on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 1 pm. and 4 p.m. shows.

A beautiful and especially meaningful production features stories of social justice through lessons of World War II's Terezin concentration camps and Japanese internment camps, and the 1964 Civil Rights Act. These amazing children spent three weeks in an intensive summer program, where they learned about the real-life story of the opera, took field trips, and heard directly from people who lived the history, including Carlotta Walls LaNier, the youngest member of the Little Rock Nine.

Opera Camp brings together 80 children from all over Los Angeles County, ages 9 to 17, for three intensive weeks each summer to work with professional opera artists, culminating in public performances of a children’s opera.

In addition, this year’s Opera Camp students were visited by various notable guests during their training including:

Carlotta Walls LaNier, youngest member of the Little Rock Nine, who was the first African-American student ever to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. Carlotta is also featured, as a character, in the opera the students will be performing on August 3.

2019 Miss America (and trained opera singer) Nia Franklin Chaka Forman, Civil Rights Workshops Presenter: Chaka’s father is James Forman Sr., a pioneer in the American civil rights movement, and his grandmother is acclaimed British author and muckraker Jessica Mitford. In association with the Foliage Theatre Project, he organizes a Shakespeare performance workshop with incarcerated juveniles.

MONARCH BEACH RESORT reopened PRIVATE BEACH CLUB

07.30.19

Monarch Beach Resort just re-opened of its exclusive Monarch Bay Beach Club after a multi-million dollar renovation to its California beach club. Exclusive to resort guests and club members, the Beach Club encompasses signature beach experiences, ocean education programs, and beachfront dining with sustainably-caught seafood and fresh California cuisine.

Previously known as the Monarch Bay Club, the building has been closed since January and unveiled an upgraded, refreshed design with its opening, including a new name, logo, warm color palette, and indoor-outdoor feel with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

The Monarch Bay Beach Club’s restaurant and the bar were re-structured to open entirely to the outdoors with an expanded bar counter with spectacular oceanfront views. With an all-new refined yet approachable menu of seafood and coastal cuisine, dishes feature local, seasonal produce and sustainably-caught seafood that reflect the coastline’s bounty and beauty, paired with iconic beach cocktails, local microbrews, and an all-California wine list. The restaurant has been ocean-friendly certified by the Surfrider Foundation.

The resort’s private club will continue to offer on-sand services including complimentary umbrellas, towels, and chair service for members and resort guests. The outdoor space now features enlarged patio restrooms with a more sophisticated look, members-only lockers and redesigned showers, new changing cabanas, and practical beach gear storage space. The Beach Lawn also received new chairs, umbrellas, and firepit tables for a picturesque lounge area for day-to-evening beachside relaxation.

Additionally, Monarch Bay Beach Club’s Ocean Adventures program offers guests equipment rentals and lessons for surfing, boogie boarding, and paddleboarding. With the renovation, Ocean Adventures reveals two new experiences; all-new window-bottom stand up paddle boards that allow riders to view the sea life below them and the ‘No Fail Surf Lesson’ which guarantees all students to stand up on a board. Additional programming elements include beachside family movie nights, live music, ukulele lessons and more.
