Harry Allen Trio at Soka Performing Arts Center
01.22.20
Harry Allen Trio will be performing at the Soka Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. Harry Allen has been described as a throwback since his choice of material is jazz standards. Allen’s jazz is played the way it was “meant” to be played: with confidence, straight-forward and without fussiness or frivolity, beautifully, and with the melody of the saxophone up front.
He’s prolific in his album recordings, with over 40 for the Japanese market alone, and has appeared as a guest on numerous albums and stages with the likes of Larry Goldings, Ehud Asherie, Rossano Sportiello, Lester Young, Bucky Pizzarelli, and John Pizzarelli. “He’s got everything,” says Bucky Pizzarelli. “You give him something to play and he’ll give you the best solo you’ve ever heard.
Tickets cost $35 & $45 and can be purchased here

BURGER BOSS introduces HEALTHY, ALL-NATURAL VEGAN PATTY
01.21.20
What once seemed impossible for practicing vegans is now quite doable at Burger Boss. The Southern California chainlet offers vegans several options with its house-made black bean patty, vegan Gouda cheese and 100% GMO sunflower oils used to transform raw potatoes into golden fries.
Plant-based meat substitutes have sky-rocked in popularity as they mimic meat with their texture and taste. But several of these products have come under scrutiny lately by dieticians and nutritionists who have found meatless alternatives to be overly processed and high in sodium.
“Our aim at Burger Boss has always been to offer a high-quality product,” said Mo Farha, founder. “Our beef is from small Pacific Northwest ranch co-op and is grass-fed. The same high standards apply to our vegan patty, which is made in-house by our burger masters using black beans and spices. Top it with a thick slice of Gouda, which is also vegan, add all your favorite toppings and sauces, wrap it in lettuce and you’re good to go.”
With a diverse menu, Burger Boss makes it effortless for carnivores and vegans to dine together. The restaurant, which is slated to open its first Los Angeles location in West Hollywood later this spring, also uses 100%, non-GMO sunflower oil to turn potatoes into golden fries.
“Many burger-centric restaurants are now offering options for non-meat eaters,” added co-founder Kamil Finan. “But just because it’s a plant-based product doesn’t mean it’s necessarily healthy. Read the label of some of these products and see if you can pronounce what’s in them. If you can say black beans, cilantro and spices, then you can order a black bean patty burger from us. That’s what sets us apart from the competition.”
Burger Boss is also one of the only restaurants using sunflower oil to make fries, too. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the balance of fatty acids found in sunflower oil, including a decent amount of linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, aids in lowering cholesterol. Sunflower oil also boosts heart health and energy while improving the immune system.
With its unique ordering process, Burger Boss puts the guest in charge by inviting them to “boss their burger” using an interactive, touch-screen kiosk where they visually build-their-burger on a flat-screen monitor and place their order when finished.
It’s a five-step process where you can choose from:
- Protein – grass-fed beef, cage-free chicken or turkey, or black bean patty
- Bun – white Kaiser, wheat grain or gluten-free
- Cheese – from American and blue cheese crumble to sharp cheddar, gouda and more
- Sauce – from traditional 1000 Island and Heinz Ketchup to chipotle mayo, honey Dijon, Sriracha and more
- Toppings – turkey bacon, organic egg, grilled pineapple, avocado as well as more traditional offerings, such as tomatoes and grilled onions
