PHILIPPE QUINT - CHAPLIN'S SMILE features violinist Philippe Quint on Friday, February 28, 2020, at 8 p.m. In an ode to Charlie Chaplin, who composed almost all of the music in his films, this unique program juxtaposes Chaplin’s love songs with those great composers who influenced him, including Debussy, Stravinsky, Brahms and Gershwin. Screen clips of Chaplin’s silent-era films and rare video footage of Chaplin conducting his orchestras in recording sessions, are accompanied by multi-Grammy Award-nominated violinist Philippe Quint. KAHULANUI, known at Hawaii’s Kings of Swing, take the stage at Irvine Barclay Theatre on Thursday, March 12 at 8 p.m. Kahulanui’s energy and dynamic musical arrangements have caused a sensation throughout the Islands and across the Mainland. The Grammy-nominated nine-piece band – including four horns plus guitar, bass, ukulele, drums and steel -- blends traditional Hawaiian music and the big band swing of the 1920s and ‘30s to create a unique sound that is all their own. Kahulanui’s CD, Mele Ho'oilina, was awarded the 2018 Na Hoku Hanohano Award (Hawai'i’s Grammy) for Best Jazz Album of the Year and is Hawaiian swing at its finest.
