Apple Updates MacBook Pro Laptops

04.13.10

Apple Computers released an update to their high-end line of laptop computers today, announcing faster and more efficient MacBook Pros in 13”, 15” and 17” sizes. Characterized by their unibody aluminum construction (as opposed to the white polycarb plastic of the MacBook), the Pro series represents Apple’s flagship portables. And coming on the heels of the press-gobbling iPad release (see our first-look story here), this long-awaited update reminds us that sometimes you need to send in a full computer to get your work done. Of course if and when the iPad is able to run MS Office and other 3rd Party apps it may be game on (or over) for laptops in general, but for now the MacBooks continue to serve as the workhorse for mobile computing folks like us.

And so, after a long (300 day) wait, we finally have an excuse to buy a new laptop. With nearly identical prices as their replacements, this trifecta of computing goodness has of course bumped up processor speed (and you’ll get what you pay for), has improved battery life (up to 10 hours claimed for the 13”), and also offers some huge solid state hard drives, which typically use less power and are less prone to crashing. The 13” model is very similar to its little white brother in many features and weighs in at a base price of $1199 for the 2.4 GHz model. For an extra $300 you get a faster processor and bigger hard drive, and then for another $300 you can step up to the 15” model. You get the idea; those folks in Cupertino are ingenius at dangling increased speed, size and performance at $300 increments…

It could be awhile before the MacBook Pro is updated again (hopefully not a year!), so now is a good time to make that purchase you’ve been putting off. New units ship from Apple in 1-3 business days online, or can be found at your local Apple Store… if you can get through the lines of iPad buyers.
