Runway to Real Way: Spring Trends
02.01.12
Although it might feel like spring with the weather we've been having lately in Orange County, it's still a couple of months away, but it's never too early to start the shopping process. This week I've complied a short list of trends for spring 2012 and how you can take what you see on the "runway" and make it work in a "real way".
A week or so ago I talked about the neon trend, a topic that I got a lot of discussion about on my Facebook page. Most people feel that they can't pull of this trend, and to be honest with you most folks can't wear full on brights like what Nanette Lapore sent down her runway for this spring. But most can add pieces of neon that will make an existing outfit POP; try a citrus-hued bag or a pair summery sandals in electric blue with a black ensamble or wear a classic grey suit with a blouse in the Pantone color of the year - tangerine.
It seems that designers alway indulge in a little bit of exotic when temperatures start to rise and it was no different for BCBG Max Azria who turned out a series of flowy, tribal-print dresses that will look poolside perfect or sexy at a summer soiree. If all over tribal doesn't work for you, try getting the look with a ethnic-patterned tunic over jeans or black leggings. I love the look with a pair of wrap flats or an arm full of bangles.
Nothing says spring like a pastel palette. Luca Luca sent down color-blocking in feminine ice cream shades that felt cool and modern thanks to their languid menswear shapes. Unfortunately, for some it conjures up memories of girlhood frill that doesn't inspire. This Spring, combine pastels into crisp ensembles that are as home in the office as they are at stylish brunches with good friends. One of the easiest ways to introduce this trend into your wardrobe is with skinny jeans, a silky top or a ladylike handbag; paired with sleek, feminine closet staples or toughen this trend up with edgy accents.
And finally, Mod! Milly, designed by Michelle Smith looked to the 50's and 60's for inspiration for their 2012 collection where she showed chic silhouettes drenched in graphic prints. All over graphic not your thing? Try being bold while still being somewhat subdued by mixing stripes, polka dots, and prints in the same color families for a monochromatic feel. Add some graphics with a head scarf or blouse under a classic blazer. I love this trend best in shoes, try a graphic wedge with a plain springtime dress.
