Coastal Cuisine of Latin America with a View

03.26.14

You will be hard pressed to find a restaurant with a better view in Long Beach, save for the Sky Room in Long Beach, than Fuego at Hotel Maya that’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

The restaurant specializes in the coastal cuisine of Latin America created by award-winning Executive Chef Victor Juarez. Fuego’s indoor-outdoor dining area offers spectacular views of downtown Long Beach and the Queen Mary. Anytime of the year, it’s a local’s favorite for fresh seafood--shrimp, oysters, mussels, lobster and tangy ceviche. They also offer an array of appetizers, as well as tacos, tortas and entrées.

It’s the perfect place in Long Beach to enjoy a handcrafted margaritas, or signature cocktails, with tasty foods, while soaking in the view. Fuego also hosts a festive outdoor brunch featuring Baja-style seafood and savory barbeque with live Latin Jazz.

Fuego is also one of the 50 participating restaurants in Eat LBC Long Beach Restaurant Week from March 30-April 5. Chef Juarez has created a special prix-fixe menu for $38 per person, tax and gratuity not included.

For the starter you can choose from spicy chicken tortilla soup with shredded chicken, roasted tomatoes, cotija cheese, and fried corn tortilla strips; a salad with mixed baby lettuce with Fuji apple with cilantro, red chile pecans, goat cheese, grape tomatoes, creamy chipotle dressing; or corn sopes, masa “boats” filled with black beans, squash, guacamole, lettuce, queso fresco, lime vinaigrette, tequila cream sauce.

For an entrée, choose one of the following: seafood crepas, filled crêpes with jumbo lump crab meat and rock shrimp roasted poblano sauce, black bean corn relish, steamed rice; or fillet of salmon with ancho chili and honey glazed fillet of salmon, spicy black bean sauce jalapeno crème, sautéed greens; pollo a la plancha, a pan-seared chili rubbed chicken breast, sofrito, black bean chorizo risotto; ropa vieja, a Cuban style braised flank steak, black bean suree, fried corn tortillas, cabbage jalapeno cilantro slaw, caramelized plantains, agave cream sauce poblano relleno, a grilled portobello mushroom with artichoke, spinach, Monterrey jack cheese, and tomato sauce.

Simmzy’s special for EAT LBC

03.20.14

With the upcoming inaugural Eat LBC, Long Beach Restaurant Week on March 30-April 5, it’s time to make plans to try some of the areas 50 eateries participating in the city’s first ever restaurant week. Each restaurant offers a prix fixe menu priced at $26 and $38 per person for dinner with wine pairing options at select locations.

One of our favorite Long Beach restaurants, Simmzy’s at Belmont Shore, specializing in upscale pub foods, wood fired pizzas, craft beer and boutique wines has created a special Eat LBC prix menu for restaurant week.

If you can make it in, you will love the casual, open-air feel, plus no doubt it will become one of your favorite Belmont Shore restaurants too. Many say the best burgers in town are here (Simmzy's angus beef patty, chow chow onions, melted cheddar, garlic aioli, lettuce and sliced tomato); we love the shrimp, citrus and avocado salad (woodfire grilled shrimp, artisan greens, oranges, avocado, toasted pepitas, red onion, radish, queso fresco and coriander vinaigrette); and their grilled fish tacos are also outstanding (fresh wild-caught oregon rock cod, soft corn tortillas, avocado, charred tomato salsa, lime, pickled radish, fried fresno chili rings and spiced sour cream). Save room for the the apple filled donut topped with vanilla ice cream, it is to die for.

Simmzy’s  has created a delicious prix fixe menu for dinner at just $26 available March 30-April 5.

Choose one item per first course: caramelized brussels sprouts with butter, garlic, lemon, anchovies, capers, bruschetta; or a kale Caesar with polenta croutons, fried capers, bacon, parmesan, and cherry tomatoes; or spiked mac ‘n’ cheese balls with fried beer mac ‘n’ cheese with freshno chilies and sausage, and caramelized onion crema dipping sauce.

For the second course, choose between, spice and vinegar pulled pork panino, a long cooked pork, chow chow onions, and swills; or fried chicken sandwich with buttermilk biscuit, bacon gravy, and sharp cheddar; or blackened catfish po’ boy with spicy remoulade, shredded lettuce, tomato, pickle; and finally, a grilled romaine salad with honey dijon vinaigrette, bacon, blue cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and pickled red onions. For dessert options, choose between, s’mores pudding with graham cracker crumbles and campfire marshmallows; or strawberry rhubarb crisp with oatmeal streusel, and vanilla bean ice cream.

Open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday; open 11 a.m. to midnight Friday; 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday. (Kitchen closes 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.)
